The former model told IANS that this was the reason that her last film Aakrosh, which tackled the issue of honour killings, was not a commercial success.
"I did Aakrosh and I felt that I was very convincing as a small town, weak girl in the film, but my fans, who love the work I do, are absolutely not ready to see me doing weak roles.
"They don't mind me playing a small town girl as long as it is a strong woman's character," said the Bengali star.
Basu revealed that her new film Dum Maaro Dum sees her return to the type of strong role that she has essayed in Corporate, Race and Bachna Ae Haseeno.
The 32-year-old partner of John Abraham commented: "Sometimes it's very important for an actor to know whether you fit the bill or not. Also, we have very limited kind of offers in the Hindi film industry. So you have to try and do things that your gut tells you to do."
