The actress, who will next be seen in Game, told The Times of India that she was forced to start her career "without a rupee".
In an interview with the paper, she said: "My great grandfather was very proud of his surname 'Ranaut' – the Rajasthani Rajput.
"So, when he learnt I'm trying my hand at modelling and acting, he urged me to drop Ranaut from my name."
She added that her family were very wealthy but she did not consider herself to be an urban type.
Ranaut denied that she had had plastic surgery done to her face last year, following media speculation about her changed appearance.
