The 28-year-old actor will be seen playing a musician styled on Jim Morrison in the film, which also stars New York-born Nargis Fakhri.
He told The Times of India that the film "took a lot" out of him and that he had taken a ten-day break after shooting because of the stress.
A source added: "The emotional scenes that he shot took [their] toll. He went into a shell and didn't meet anyone during this time. It took a lot of coaxing from friends and family to finally draw him out."
The film's proposed ending has already proven controversial, with commentators saying that it could shock Kapoor's young fans.
He will next be seen in the romantic mystery film Barfee, wherein he will play a deaf and dumb man.
