The actor has since been replaced by Slumdog Millionaire's Irrfan Khan.
Speaking to The Times of India, helmer Anees Bazmee said: "When Sonam came into the picture, we quickly changed Anil to Irrfan.
"It would've looked very odd for Anil to play the roving-eyed Casanova in a film featuring his daughter."
Katrina Kaif was originally cast in the role taken by Sonam, who will play a young woman beset by male admirers.
Kapoor has previously said that she does not think her father looks old enough to play a believable father figure on screen.
Thank You will hit cinemas on April 8.
