Although it had earlier been reported as merely delayed, Heer Ranjha looks unlikely to be made in the near future, if ever, The Times of India reports.
Producer Sajid Nadiadwala revealed: "It is true that Heer Ranjha is on hold right now. We are working with Shahid on a different venture. The announcement on this will come soon."
The production company was reportedly unhappy with the script's second half, and thus made the decision to focus on a new project with Kapoor.
A number of actresses including Priyanka Chopra, Anushka Sharma and Sarah Jane Dias had been linked to the period drama.
The star's next release is expected to be his father Pankaj Kapoor's home production Mausum.
