The producer of Dirty Picture has described the film as an Indian version of Boogie Nights, the Hollywood hit about the porn industry.
It depicts the life and tragic death of Smitha, who stunned audiences with her willingness to take off her clothes on screen in the 1980s.
She told New Kerala: "I would be surprised if I don't get unbelievable critical acclaim for Dirty Picture and a national award for my actress Vidya Balan.
"The movie has one of the most well-written scripts I have come across and a lot of youngsters in my office have looked at it with great admiration."
Vidya Balan was told by Dirty Picture director Milan Lutheria that she needed to become more comfortable in sensual scenes.
