Filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar is reported to have made the decision in order to protect the look of the project, Mumbai Mirror reports.
A source for the tabloid revealed: "It is quite an intense contemporary film. Knowing Madhur and his take on realistic films, he will be making characters, which are definitely inspired from real life.
"To keep everything under check and to see to it that no-one gets offended with information leaking out from the sets, the producers and Madhur have not only signed a non-disclosure contract with everyone but they have also banned mobile phones from the sets."
Karan Johar's Agneepath and Vidya Balan vehicle Dirty Picture have made similar demands on non-production staff during the filming process.
Rai Bachchan's co-star Arjun Rampal, who plays an actor in the film, is said to be modelling his character on Shah Rukh Khan.
National Award-winning director Bhandarkar launched his latest project at this year's Cannes Film Festival.
