Sinha was set to take a prominent role as Kareena Kapoor's father, but reportedly informed the makers of the film that he no longer wished to play the part.
A source told IANS: "Shatruji has made a promise to himself that he won't play Papa to any other heroine except his darling Sonakshi."
When questioned about the eleventh-hour replacement, the film's producer Atul Agnihotri said: "The reason was dates. Shatruji was already committed for the Bhojpuri Kaun Banega Crorepati.
"The other thing is that Shatruji's role was drastically reduced... It didn't seem worth Shatruji's presence any more."
According to reports, Sinha had initially agreed to star in the film out of loyalty to Salman Khan, who had made his daughter Sonakshi an overnight star with Dabaang.
Raj Babbar has agreed to step in and take on the role.
Shatrughan Sinha took a break from acting three years ago to concentrate on his political career.
