The film, which will be made by the actor's Hari Om Productions, also features stand-up comedian Russell Peters and actor Camilla Belle.
"The movie is a full action, colorful, humourous, heart-felt musical. The setting is an obstacle-strewn love story with a dramatic quest for the hero," a statement revealed.
"It's also a keenly observed cross-cultural drama in the same classification as Bend It Like Beckham and Slumdog Millionaire with a hero caught between a family's traditional expectations and a dream to make it big in the national sport of an adopted country."
Hollywood filmmaker Robert Lieberman will direct the project.
Kumar is currently the Canadian Tourism Commission's (CTC) Ambassador for India.
The actor recently shared a dance with the Canadian Prime Minister's wife at the premiere of Thank You.
The film is scheduled for release on September 30.
