Item songs are musical performances that have very little to do with the film itself, and tend to feature women in revealing clothes.
The 46-year-old actor decided to shoot the song 'I Hate You Like I Love You' himself after several actresses refused the item number.
Speaking to The Times of India, Khan said: "The recent questioning from media, whether I am doing a song sequence in the film or not... Such things made me ponder. So, I must say that the media has inspired me to do the item number. I want to be the number one item boy of the industry.
"It's a tribute to the 1980s discos. My hairdo is inspired by Amitabhji and I sport chest hair, just like Anil Kapoorji. The dance moves are similar to Mithunda as I am a big fan of him. And my attire will be a mix of Govinda, Amitabhji and other actors from that time."
The Mumbai Mirror reports that Katrina Kaif turned down the song while Mallika Sherawat, Rakhi Sawant and Deepika Padukone were also considered.
A source told IANS: "Aamir had said that he wouldn't mind grooving on the number, if he doesn't find the right girl to do this particular item song. That's exactly what happened."
The item number, directed by Abhinay Deo and choreographed by Bosco, was shot in five days amidst tight security.
Delhi Belly will be released on July 1.
