The Dharma productions film will bring back the Raichand family over ten years after the orginal project was released.
Johar said: "It's a workable idea. I am no longer averse to it. It would be a bold step if I make it."
The follow-up is expected to reunite stars Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan, Kajol and Kareena Kapoor.
Johar added: "It's very strange. But all the six main members of the cast are as dear to me now as they were ten years ago when I made the film. I'm sure they're as charged about the sequel as I am."
Amitabh Bachchan gave an indication of the sequel's plot on his Big Adda blog, writing: "It would be a story on the growth of the brothers and the problems that arise because of their independent understanding and working of the business empire of the father, a split within them and so on..."
Kabhi Kushi Kabhie Gham is considered one of Hindi cinema's biggest overseas hits, becoming the first Bollywood movie to get a theatrical release in the German market.
