The movie focuses on a controversial policy, which sanctions the reservation of government jobs and places in educational institutions on the basis of caste.
A spokeperson for Lucknow University told NDTV: "Taking into account the sensitive and controversial issue on which the movie is based, we have finally decided that the actor, or anyone interested in visiting the campus for the promotion of Aarakshan, will not be allowed.
"As the movie is based on a very sensitive topic, it could create differences on the campus, and at the same time can vitiate the varsity's education atmosphere. Considering all this, we today (Friday) decided not to allow anyone on the campus for the film promotion."
The spokesperson explained that Bachchan was otherwise welcome to visit the campus and interact with students.
"At the same time, we want to make it clear that if the actor wants to visit the campus for a reason other than the film promotion, then he would definitely be welcomed," he added.
Shot in Bhopal, the film also stars Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone and Manoj Bajpai.
Aarakshan will release on August 12, 2011.
