The West Is West actor said that filmmakers should not borrow storylines from earlier projects, Hindustan Times reports.
Puri stated: "I don't like the idea of remaking old classics. We should come up with original ideas and films."
The actor said that directors should look to Indian literature as a form of inspiration for potential film projects.
"Our literature in Hindi and other vernacular languages are full of strong ideas, but we only look at inspiration from old hits and abroad," said Puri.
The actor conceded, however, that sometimes his work forced him to take on remade films, as had been the case with his 2006 release Don.
"What to do? I am an actor and have to choose from the best roles I am offered with," he explained.
Puri spoke to Digital Spy last year about how he decides what films to work on, revealing: "I do Bollywood commercial films for butter, and for bread I do art films."
