The actor will have a cameo role in the film, appearing alongside Parks and Recreation star Rob Lowe, Russell Peters, Camilla Belle and Anupam Kher.
He told The Times of India: "Breakaway is a touching story about a young Indian ice hockey player who wants to get into the big league.
"I am introducing Vinay Virmani, who is a very good ice hockey player in real life as well. The film is about an Indian family wanting to break the stranglehold the whites have abroad in sports."
Breakaway is directed by Robert Lieberman, who directed The Tortured and The Stranger, starring wrestler Steve Austin.
Kumar's production company Hari Om is financing the project, which has been described as being in the tradition of Slumdog Millionaire and Bend It Like Beckham.
Kumar starred in the 2009 Chinese-Indian action film Chandni Chowk to China, which was the first ever Indian film to be shot in China.
