Basu is 'furious' about media reports suggesting that she is heartbroken about the demise of the relationship, according to The Hindustan Times.
Abraham spoke of his regret at the end of the couple's eight-year relationship during an interview on Simi Garewal's show Simi Selects India's Most Desirable.
When asked for the reason behind the break-up, the 38-year-old actor said: "We had a beautiful relationship, but it doesn't exist anymore. I'm solely responsible for it. I didn't want to get married, maybe one day I would, and I'll take everyone by surprise.
"We've given closure to the relationship as I didn't match up to the relationship. I was not ready to commit when the relationship needed culmination. I have grown out of the relation... the breakup is painful but you have to move on.
"We had decided, if we ever parted ways it won't be for another man or woman."
Basu responded on Twitter saying: "I don't need to be on a talkshow to prove my goodness! My relationship with John Abraham is over for good - for reasons known best to the both of us.
"What happens between two people is supposed to stay between the two when it's over, that's the dignity that I have grown up with and the respect I deserve."
Basu added: "My break-up happened almost a year ago! Why r these stories coming up now? Is it a pr exercise for a film or over imaginative journalism? (sic)"
The Dum Maaro Dum actress, who has been linked to co-stars including Josh Hartnett and Shahid Kapoor, went on to say: "Waking up to stories about my life everyday is no fun! Making me sound tragic when I am in a happy place is not ok with me!"
Abraham and Basu collaborated on screen in films including Goal and Jism during their relationship.
