The ice hockey-themed project marks the debut of Vinay Virmani, who features alongside established actors Rob Lowe and Anupam Kher.
Kumar, who celebrates his 44th birthday today, is keen to use the film as a means of promoting the sport.
"Not many of us actually knew that India has an ice hockey team," he said.
"But now, we are sure that it will help us promote the sport through our film. Everyone involved with Speedy Singhs feels that it's a very interesting sport."
The project, which is known in some territories as Breakaway, is scheduled to have a number of showings at the festival.
The Indo-Canadian movie is reportedly of a similar genre to Bend It Like Beckham and Slumdog Millionaire.
Speedy Singhs has its full theatrical release September 23.
