The actor told Mumbai Mirror that his attitude towards work has changed since his initial years in Hindi cinema.
Khan revealed: "I've been very bull-headed and whimsical in the past. I'm taking my career more seriously now. I was brought up to be the good Samaritan."
"Now, I can see the industry is so cut-throat. You need to be selfish. The only people you need to make sacrifices for are the ones you love."
Khan is currently acting in and producing Love Breakups Zindagi with Dia Mirza.
"We're busy gearing up for the film. It's a very modern love story, about all the things that a young, urban person would go through being in a relationship," he said.
The actor also features in ensemble film Tezz as part of a cast including crossover star Anil Kapoor.
However, Khan recently told Digital Spy that his audience prefers to see him in lead roles and playing romantic characters.
