According to The Times of India, the actors will feature in Farah's fourth directorial venture.
"Deepika has it all - beauty, grace, talent. All she needs is that little push which would propel her into the big league," said a source.
Although Padukone made her debut in Farah's Om Shanti Om, the two Hindi film figures are said to have later fallen out.
"Though outwardly she remained calm, inwardly the end of her relationship changed her attitude to love and fidelity. Deepika lost a lot of professional ground because of the relationship. But she is now determined to get back where she belongs," added the source.
The project was originally said to have been offered to Katrina Kaif, who was forced to turn it down due to scheduling problems.
Salman recently made a cameo appearance as himself in a song sequence for the former choreographer's Tees Maar Khan.
