A trade magazine publicising the film is said to have cited fake material from directors Ken Ghosh, Parmeet Sethi and Nikhil Advani, Mumbai Mirror reports.
"Shahid is flabbergasted. He cannot believe that such a thing has been carried out without even keeping him in the loop," said a friend of the lead actor.
Quotes from Ghosh, Sethi and Advani have been used praising the film, despite claims that the directors have not publicly commented on the project.
Kapoor's official spokesperson added: "Shahid is not aware of these ads. He has been busy with post-overseas productions. The producers of Mausam must have put these ads out."
The Pankaj Kapur-directed delayed project is out now.
