The 26-year old actor has appeared in three romantic comedies so far, including his upcoming Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl.
Speaking to Mumbai Mirror, a source said: "After his highly successful debut in Band Baaja Baraat, many filmmakers have wanted to work with Ranveer.
"However, [director] Vikramaditya Motwane's film, which is a thriller, instantly appealed to the actor. Ranveer was eager to come on board as it will be the first thriller in his career."
Production on the film is expected to begin in December.
Director Motwane has denied that the film is a remake of a Tamil blockbuster called Kaadhal which was expected to star Meenu Kumar and Ekta Kapoor.
Shah Rukh Khan last week singled out Singh as one of Bollywood's most promising actors.
The veteran star said: "I think in the film industry among the young boys I find Ranveer very confident. I have met him once or twice recently and he is full of confidence and energy."
