The original stars Kangana Ranaut as a rebellious girl who rejects the romantic advances of a non-resident Indian man who is looking for a wife.
However, Manu, who is played by R Madhavan, decides that he loves her despite her demeanour and cannot forget about her.
A source told Mumbai Mirror: "The success of Tanu Weds Manu has been attributed mainly to Kangana's character. [Director Anand] Rai obviously wants to retain her in the film. But since he wants a bigger film, he has approached an A-list actor Shahid Kapoor."
Rai confirmed the news, saying: "I am in the process of finalising the drafts of my two films right now. Yes, I am meeting actors but it is too early to say who will be in either film."
In February, Madhavan said that he wants to continue acting with Ranaut in the future as he "really enjoyed working with her".
Prior to Tanu Weds Manu, Ranaut was most famous for heavyweight roles in films such as Fashion.
Kapoor is currently attached to Teri Meri Kahaani and Once Upon a Time in Mumbaii 2.
