The actor recently said he is exhausted at the prospect of making another action film after completing Ra.One and wants to concentrate on other genres.
A source told Mumbai Mirror: "Shah Rukh clearly told producer Sajid Nadiadwala and director Vishal Bharadwaj that he didn't want to work on another love story.
"He is already doing a romantic film with Yash Chopra and so, to go straight into the romantic space again seems redundant. Shah Rukh suggested that he go into the Maqbool-Omkara space with Vishal."
The insider added that the actor is keen to do an adaptation of Shakespeare like his contemporaries.
"Shah Rukh loved what Vishal did with Ajay Devgn and Saif Ali Khan in Omkara. They plan to shoot the Bollywood adaptation of Hamlet in the remote areas of North India," the source said.
The actor is now unlikely to go ahead with the planned adaptation of Chetan Baghat's Two States, which centres on a couple from different states who face disapproval from their parents.
In 2010, Aamir Khan was accused of stealing the idea for 3 Idiots from Baghat's novel Five Point Someone.
