The actor sustained the injury during a fight scene after choosing not to use a body double, Mumbai Mirror reports.
"Hrithik was supposed to lift a burly fighter who weighs nearly 110kg during the Agneepath shoot," said a source. "This is a very important scene in the film. Perhaps he got a little carried away and decided to do it himself."
Roshan has been advised to take complete bed rest for about 15 days, forcing Karan Johar to delay shooting on the remake project.
Roshan was seen having treatment at Mumbai's Breach Candy Hospital.
"The actor entered the hospital, visibly in a lot of pain. The doctors attended to him almost immediately," added the source.
Roshan's father Rakesh Roshan confirmed his son's current ill health.
"Hrithik has been working almost continuously on his TV show Just Dance and Karan Johar's film Agneepath. He is back home, he just needs a little rest since he is overworked," he explained.
Rishi Kapoor and Sanjay Dutt both play negative characters in the Karan Johar production.
Agneepath is scheduled for release on January 26, 2012.
