The actor said that it was important that his guitar playing skills looked authentic in the film.
"I had no idea how to play the guitar and neither can I sing," he said.
"But since the character was that of a musician, I felt it was important to learn how to play the guitar because when I would perform on the stage before large audiences, they would feel truth behind it."
Kapoor was recently mobbed by college students at NMIMS, Mumbai. The actor was joined on stage by director Imtiaz Ali, debut actor Nargis Fakhri and voice of Rockstar - singer Mohit Chauhan.
Kapoor performed a jam session with Chauhan and students from the college.
He previously learnt how to milk a cow for his part in the project. The star also filmed key scenes of the movie in Mumbai's red light district.
Eros International's Rockstar releases November 11.
