The organisers of a promotional event reportedly accused Kapoor of failing to honour his contract to perform at the Phoenix Mall and argued with the actor at the airport for nearly two hours.
Speaking to NDTV, director Imtiaz Ali said: "We had neither signed any contract nor taken money and how could we charge when we were on a promotional trip for the movie?"
The mall administration blamed the local event management company for the fiasco.
"The event managers misinformed everyone, including us, that they had entered into a formal contract for a show by Ranbir and his female lead Nargis Fakhri and that it would be followed by a media interaction," said Phoenix Mall manager Anuj ShuklaIt.
Ali managed to pacify the organisers, the public and the media after a scheduled press conference was also abandoned.
Kapoor finally left Lucknow for New Delhi at around 8pm to continue the promotion of Rockstar, which sees him play a musician character based on the real-life Jim Morrison.
Kapoor reportedly suffered from depression after filming some of the film's more emotional scenes.
