The film follows a young Indian man living in Canada who wants to become an ice hockey player despite his parents' wishes.
Kumar told the Hindustan Times: "I told everyone associated with it that the film wouldn't do well here. I know my country.
"Speedy Singhs is not for the Indian audience but for non-resident Indians across the world who find it hard to settle down in a foreign country and follow their dreams, particularly when they have to deal with extremely traditional parents in a western world."
The film - titled Breakaway in Canada - is Kumar's production company's first international project.
Pop stars Drake and Ludacris make cameo appearances in the sports film, which also stars Rob Lowe, Russell Peters and Camilla Belle.
Kumar apologised to the Bachchan family on behalf of Speedy Singhs star Russell Peters, after the comedian-turned-actor criticised Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's acting skills.
