The Dirty Picture sees Balan taking on the central part, which is allegedly based on the famously sultry South Indian star Silk Smitha.
Balan told the Hindustan Times: "Contemporary films don't have songs for actors [beyond] that one item number in the film.
"This film has fulfilled all my wishes - from dancing like the actors of the '80s to wearing their clothes and loud make up, dancing around pots and rolling down slopes."
Balan also praised the film's director, adding: "I loved the character because of her vibrant personality. And [director] Milan [Luthria's] conviction egged me on.
"I was waiting for the right opportunity to unleash my sexuality on screen. I got it this time. I was always comfortable doing this role."
Balan also revealed that her one of her inspirations for the part was 1980s Bollywood icon Dimple Kapadia.
In October, Balan was rushed to hospital because of suspected exhaustion from long hours on set.
