Abhishek Bachchan thanks well-wishers after Aishwarya Rai gives birth

Abhishek Bachchan has taken to Twitter to thank well-wishers, following the birth of his first child.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan gave birth to their baby girl on Wednesday, at Mumbai's Seven Hills hospital.

"Thank you all for your prayers and good wishes. Both Aishwarya and the baby are doing great and taking some much needed rest..." the actor posted shortly after the delivery.

"And I'm trying my level best to get rid of this caffeine high and get some sleep too. Don't think it'll work. TOO EXCITED!!!!" added the Paa actor.

Abhishek tweeted a number of Bollywood figures for their support, including Genelia D'Souza, Riteish Deshmukh, Karan Johar, Shah Rukh Khan, Arjun Rampal and Sonam Kapoor.

The Indian media have been issued a set of guidelines to follow when covering the arrival.

An announcement on the child's name is expected within the next few days.
