The star is said to be drawing on the experiences her elder sibling has had as an actor in the Hindi film industry, Mumbai Mirror reports.
"The film is about the journey of this protagonist from being a nobody to the biggest heroine in the industry and then again falling down to an all-time low," a source revealed.
"While this character graph reminds of Priyanka Chopra's supermodel role in Bhandarkar's earlier flick Fashion, Kareena seems to have a better reference point in sister Karisma Kapoor," added the source.
In spite of initially failing to find success in Bollywood, Karisma went on to have sizeable hits in the '90s with projects such as Raja Hindustani and Biwi No.1.
The star is preparing for her first film role since marriage in Vikram Bhatt's Dangerous Ishq, opposite Delhi model-turned-actor Rajneesh Duggal.
When Kareena Kapoor took over the title role following Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's pregnancy announcement, the director had to reshoot new scenes.
Karisma and Kareena are the grandchildren of the late legendary actor-producer-director Raj Kapoor.
