The actor missed two important social engagements in the Indian city, including the premiere of Desi Boyz.
He told The Times of India: "I had to leave suddenly because I was called for a charity event in LA for Pratham, the child literacy organisation that I'm closely associated with. I thought that was more important than anything else."
According to the paper, Kapoor was also scheduled to attend the wedding of cop Isaque Bhagwan, who he plays in an upcoming film.
"I am sure David [Dhawan] and Isaque would understand," he said. "In fact I've assured Isaque I will visit his home to bless the couple the minute I land in Mumbai. As for David, he's a dear friend.
"I've had great fun working with him. I am really eager to see his son's Desi Boyz. How is it doing?"
Kapoor will next be seen in the latest instalment of the Mission: Impossible franchise.
He is reportedly planning to host a huge party for co-star Tom Cruise when he arrives in Mumbai for a two-day trip.
