The Dharma Productions director was alleged to have signed for the Adeeb Rais project, reports Mumbai Mirror.
"After the release of I Hate Luv Storys, I was reading a magazine and happened to see pictures of Punit. I felt he was apt for the character that I had in mind. We have approached him to star in the film," explained Rais.
Malhotra, however, has denied reports that he will feature in the project about a career-orientated woman's search to find her ideal man.
The nephew of Manish Malhotra claims to have only met Rais on one occasion, and the topic of the film was not brought up for discussion.
Before making his directorial debut with the Imran Khan, Sonam Kapoor and Sameer Dattani romantic comedy I Hate Luv Storys, Malhotra had indicated that he wanted to work as an actor in Hindi cinema.
The filmmaker had previously assisted Karan Johar on a number of projects including Kabhi Kushi Kabhie Gham and Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna.
