Tom Cruise 'fans' at Mumbai's international airport were paid extras, reports have claimed.

The actor was met by a crowd of more than 200 supporters when he landed in India to promote Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, reports First Post.

"I don't know who he is or what he does," said one of the paid extras. "We were told to come here by 1pm today and wait for a foreign VIP to come out of the airport gate and scream and shout when he came."

Anil Kapoor was also there to receive Cruise when he landed in the country.

"None of us know who Tom is," added the anonymous extra. "There was a buffet lunch also for us and we were paid Rs 150 for this job today. We do this for television shows and other such events where crowds are required."

The US star's India trip also included a visit to the Taj Mahal in Agra.

The actor met a number of Bollywood actors including Preity Zinta, Sonam Kapoor and Arjun Rampal, at an event hosted for him by Anil Kapoor.

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol opens in US cinemas on December 16 and in the UK on December 26.
