Police were asked to take action over the display of posters and promotional material featuring the actor alongside Naseeruddin Shah, Emraan Hashmi and Tusshar Kapoor, reports IANS.
Advocate SK Azad petitioned against the project under the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act 1986, arguing that the film hoardings were 'causing harm to people' and 'spoiling minds'.
The controversy is the latest to hit the production after it was banned from theatrical exhibition in Pakistan and criticised by the family of Balan's character Silk Smitha.
As trade analysts had predicted, the Balaji Telefilms release has performed well commercially at the box office.
