Shetty, who was working on the remake of Gulzar's Angoor, has reportedly put the project on hold in order to focus on the Khan film.
According to NDTV, a source said: "Since it's not easy to get Shah Rukh's dates, Rohit (Shetty) felt it was important to have another script ready.
"If the script of Angoor remake didn't shape up to their liking, it would take a while before they came up with another concept for a film with SRK."
While Khan had expressed a preference for Katrina Kaif to take the female lead, Shetty felt Kareena Kapoor would suit the character better.
"Considering the action-comedy element of the film, the female character is quite a firebrand. No-one else except Kareena could suit the part," the source added.
Chennai Express is one of the first new film projects confirmed by Khan since the release of Ra.One.
