The 'Chikni Chameli' song appears in the remake of the 1970s film Agneepath and stars Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra, Sanjay Dutt, Rishi Kapoor and Katrina Kaif.
According to an IANS source, Kaif - who won accolades for her 'Sheila Ki Jawani' item number in Tees Maar Khan - shot 'Chikni Chameli' over a ten-day period.
"The song is a rustic number, so she had to dance [barefoot] on the uneven ground ," said Ganesh Acharya, the dance choreographer for the song.
"Halfway through the number, she injured the soles of her feet, as the continuous pressure peeled off her skin. Despite everyone telling her to attend to her injuries, she continued with the dance without a whimper."
The song has been adapted from the Marathi hit 'Kombdi Padali,' and features Kaif in the traditional garb of a fisherwoman. Kaif's rendition has been compared with similar performances by actresses Helen and Madhuri Dixit.
"I think they looked stunning in those songs. But I'd take it as a compliment if I came anywhere close to what Helen and Madhuri did."
Speaking at the music premiere of Agneepath, director Karan Malhotra says he believes Kaif has done full justice to the song.
"I think the way the song was made, it was so wonderful, that only a top-most actress could have done justice to the song. And as far as Katrina is concerned, her USP is that she has never been seen in any film in that kind of zone that 'Chikni Chameli' is in," he said.
"[This is] why she also stands out in that atmosphere and that is why the song is catching a lot of [eyes]."
Produced by Karan Johar's Dharma Productions, Agneepath releases in cinemas worldwide on January 26, 2012.
