The actor and long-term partner Kapur had flown into the area on December 23, before the city was hit by two large tremors, Mumbai Mirror reports.
"When they landed at Christchurch, they did not want to stay there and instead took off to Queenstown. After they arrived at Queenstown, they got to know about the earthquake in Christchurch," a source explained.
"The first quake measured 5.8 on the Richter scale and the second tremor came 80 minutes later and measured 5.3. Needless to say, not only Vidya and Siddharth, but also their families back home were relieved to know that they were safe and had left Christchurch in time."
The Dirty Picture star and Kapur are said to have returned back to Mumbai in time for the New Year.
Balan and the UTV Motion Pictures Head were rumoured to be getting engaged last year.
