The stars took the first three positions in a survey measuring the leading actors based on films released from January 2008 to December 2011.
"What is the Box Office status of our actors? Presenting the India and Overseas biz of last 3 years and what's their current position (sic)," trade analyst Taran Adarsh posted on Twitter.
Aamir emerged as the most commercially successful actor of the period, due to his performances in Taare Zameen Par, Ghajini and 3 Idiots.
However, My Name Is Khan, Ra.One and Don 2 helped Shah Rukh Khan lead the overseas market.
Dabangg actor Salman saw more success in the Indian market than internationally.
"This list should be an eye-opener, especially for those who live in ivory towers and continue to remain in denial even after their films flop," Adarsh said.
The remaining positions in the survey were taken by Ranbir Kapoor, Hrithik Roshan, Ajay Devgn, Saif Ali Khan, Akshay Kumar, Imran Khan, Emraan Hashmi, Shahid Kapoor, John Abraham and Abhishek Bachchan.
