Director Sanjay Gupta told NDTV he was "tired of waiting" for Oberoi to confirm whether he would take on the role of Dawood Ibrahim in the film.
"Me and my co-producer Balaji Telefilms just got tired of waiting for Vivek to make up his mind," he said. "What we didn't understand is why Vivek chose to give us the impression he loved the script and that he was on."
Oberoi had starred in the 2007 hit Shootout at Lokhandwala and was expected to be cast in the sequel, but Gupta was confident he had a replacement for Oberoi.
"We already have a very strong alternative in mind. We'll make the announcement soon," said Gupta.
Shaitan director Bejoy Nambiar has confirmed that Oberoi has been cast in his next film David, which also stars Tamil actors Tabu and Vikram.
On hearing the news, Gupta wished the director good luck for the movie.
"We've the highest regard for Bejoy. In fact, I loved his Shaitan and rooted for the film when I was part of an awards jury this year. I wish him well with Vivek," he said.
John Abraham, Saif Ali Khan and Tusshar Kapoor are among the cast of Shootout at Wadala.
It was recently reported that Vidya Balan has also dropped out of the film.
