The thriller is based on the 1969 French-language film Z.
Banerjee said: "Frankly I have been stunned by the performances from our stars and our character artistes."
The director said that the project will change perceptions of 'serial kisser' Hashmi and Deol as a non-commercial male lead.
"I can safely say that all preconceived notions that people have about both Abhay and Emraan are going to be shattered by this movie," Banerjee said.
The production, based on the lives of politicians and their greed, also stars Kalki Koechlin and Prosenjit Chatterjee.
Shanghai is slated for release on June 8.
