The actor was reported as saying in January that he beat his Bollywood rival in on-screen couplings because Kapoor cannot be romantically paired with Kareena Kapoor, as the two are cousins.
Khan told The Times of India: "That is not my quote. Someone said that I can work with Kareena and Ranbir can't, and I merely said, 'Yes, that is true'.
"I don't make such antagonistic and aggressive statements. That is the fabrication of some eager journalist."
His Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu co-star Kareena Kapoor added: "Imran is too sweet a guy to make such statements. And I don't think there is an edge because everyone knows that Ranbir and I are brother and sister. So it is no big deal."
In December, Ranbir Kapoor said that he is not "friends" with Imran Khan, in response to media speculation about rivalries between the two young stars.
