Deol is best known for his action films, including Arjun and Gadar: Ek Prem Katha.
"The idea of turning Sunny into a non-violent professor did not go down well with the distributors in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and the rest of North India," a source told Mumbai Mirror.
"So the script has undergone a quick revision. While Sunny still plays a teacher he will be taking on college hoodlums' fist-to-fist.
"He won't be the Gandhian lamb of a Professor Saab that his father played in Asit Sen's Sharafat 40 years ago. He will be far more aggressive and even take off his kurta for the climactic battle."
The sequel follows 1990's Ghayal, which saw Deol playing an amateur boxer who fights to avenge the death of his brother.
In 2009, Deol made a comeback in the comedy Fox after suffering a string of action flops.
Last year, the actor revealed that he does not advise his younger sister Esha on her career.
