The actress's last action movie was the international production Chandi Chowk to China, co-starring Akshay Kumar.
Padukone told DNA India: "Action is a genre that I'm yet to tap fully. It would be pretty thrilling to be able to do pull off some stunts on my own, so I wish I could do an out and out action film.
"I've always been into sports, so it's not like I can't take on physically strenuous activities on screen. I think more than anything, it would be a fun challenge for me."
Padukone added: "It's hard to say whether I prefer rom-coms over action or drama, I think each has it's own excitement."
She claimed this week that she had been forced to pull out of the action sequel Race 2 because of delays with the schedule.
However, director Ramesh Taurani accused her of dropping out of the movie in favour of starring in a Hollywood project.
