The Agneepath star will shoot the movie back-to-back with a remake of Satte Pe Satta, which wil also be produced by Ashtavinayak.
A source told Mumbai Mirror: "[Director] Soham [Shah] came up with the idea of making a film on Sharman. Sanjay Dutt loved the idea so much, he readily agreed to produce the film as well.
"Soham's new project will now go on floors on May 2. It will be shot in a start-to-finish schedule. It will be one of the most expensive films of the year."
The insider added that Vivek Oberoi is expected to play a male lead, with Chitrangada Singh taking on a supporting role.
In January, Dutt described his part in Agneepath as his darkest yet in his career.
He described himself as mainly an action star after signing up to the remake of the 1990 film.
