According to Mumbai Mirror, the actress has excused herself from the film, citing 'date problems'.
A friend of the Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu star confirmed that the actress is no longer a part of the movie, stating: "Kareena has already informed Rohit Shetty that she wouldn't be able to work in Chennai Express. SRK [Shah Rukh Khan] is aware of it as well."
Kapoor had been cast in the film opposite Khan following much speculation as to which actress would take on the role. While Khan had expressed a preference for Katrina Kaif to take the female lead, director Shetty felt Kapoor would suit the character better.
Deepika Padukone has since been approached to take over from Kapoor.
A source close to the project said: "Deepika has given her nod of consent. The official signing should happen soon."
