The actor has played the title role in Raju Hirani's franchise since 2003.
He told Hindustan Times: "From khalnayak [villain], I became Munnabhai. A role like that comes once in a lifetime. It was not just an inspiration for others; it was a lesson for me as well.
"I understood what it means for a patient to be hugged by a doctor. A mere hug expresses so much warmth and happiness to the other person. Now, I make it a point to hug people I really like. [Munnabhai] changed my life."
Dutt took on the role shortly after he was arrested for illegally possessing arms in 1993.
It was reported last week that Dutt will be working with Shah Rukh Khan on a new Dharma Productions film.
In December, the Bollywood veteran described action films as his "forte".
