Bachchan faced criticism from the international media for not shedding weight following the birth of her daughter Aradhya.
According to Bollywood Samachar, My Name is Khan actress Kajol, who took a break from films after giving birth to her second child, responded to questions regarding Bachchan's weight gain by saying: "It's stupid to have this conversation! Everyone has the right to their lives and to look the way they want to. Tomorrow, I can put on 25 kilos… it's my own choice, my body!
"She is at home taking care of her baby. As long as it doesn't affect her work, I don't understand why it should be under discussion."
Actress Sonali Bendre also recently came to the Dhoom 2 star's defence, having been quoted by the International Business Times as saying: "People are being too harsh on her. She has just had a baby. She deserves a break. Please let her be. Let her enjoy this happy phase of her life."
Former Miss Universe Lara Dutta, who gave birth to a daughter in January, condemned the media for criticising Bachchan's appearance.
"You have no right to pass comments on women like Aishwarya, who have gone through a hard time during pregnancy," said Dutta. "I stayed away from putting on weight because of yoga during my pregnancy, but that's my personal choice which may not be the case with Ash.
"So, please refrain from getting judgemental. Respect the private life of Ash as a mother, who has every right to look however she wants."
Actor and director Pooja Bhatt spoke out on Twitter about the controversy regarding Bachchan's weight gain, saying: "Find this debate about Aishwarya Rai's weight inane. She is a gorgeous woman period. All the ugly people being malicious should take a hike!"
