After highlighting social issues like female foeticide and dowry in the fourth episode of his show Satyamev Jayate, Khan highlighted malpractices in the medical profession.
Reacting to the episode, an umbrella body of 21 medical institutions reportedly asked for an apology from the 3 Idiots star for sending a "wrong message" about the medical community.
Akhtar used Twitter to describe their demand as "sick", writing: "Indian medical association wants Aamir to apologise for exposing corruption in their profession. That is really sick.
"It is not Aamir Khan but some immoral dishonest greedy and corrupt doctors who are insulting the medical profession and many honest doctors."
Bollywood stars such as Salman Khan and Preity Zinta have praised Khan for his TV show.
