The film, which stars Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Ileana D'Cruz, had received high praise from audiences and film critics around the world for its charming portrayal of love that transcends disability.
Speaking to The Hindustan Times, producer and managing director at Disney UTV Studios Siddharth Roy Kapur said that the overwhelming response to the film is unprecedented.
"These are the moments that filmmakers, artists, technicians and producers live for. The love and appreciation that is being showered on the film from audiences and critics in India and around the world is unprecedented," said Kapur.
"It's a big moment for Anurag, the cast, the crew, and for all of us at Disney UTV. This is a film we have supported and nurtured from its very inception, and it gives us a tremendous sense of satisfaction to have our creative instincts backed by the audience."
Made at a budget of Rs 30 crore, Barfi! has already collected Rs 2 million in the overseas market, exceeding figures for Ranbir Kapoor's previous releases Rajneeti and Rockstar.
Speaking about the film's success, movie critic Taran Adarsh commented: "Barfi! has done remarkable business. The film gathered steam with each passing day, rising to the maximum on Saturday and Sunday.
"It was released in less than 700 cinema halls in India, a tiny release as compared to the biggies. Occupancy at multiplexes was fantastic."
In a recent interview with Digital Spy, Ranbir Kapoor said that the film was inspired by the movies of Frank Capra, Charlie Chaplin and his grandfather, the legendary Raj Kapoor.
