The film, which tells the story of a deaf-mute boy searching for lasting love, has benefited from positive word of mouth.
It reportedly experienced a further 20% increase in ticket sales as a result of a national holiday in India for the religious festival Ganesh Chathurti,The Hindustan Times reports.
Writing on Twitter, trade analyst Taran Adarsh said: "Barfi Fri 9.2 cr, Sat 11.5 cr, Sun 13.9 cr, Mon 6.5 cr, Tue 6 cr, Wed 7.25 cr. Total: Rs. 54.35 cr nett. Extraordinary!
"Barfi has done remarkable business. The film gathered steam with each passing day, rising to the optimum on Saturday and Sunday."
Made at a budget of 30 crores, Barfi! appears to have appealed in particular to the middle-class audiences, with high attendance at the Indian multiplexes, while the NRI audience collected 13 crores at the international box office.
Bollywood's stars have been vocal in their praise of the film and the work of the entire cast.
After attending a screening, Don 2 star Lara Dutta said on Twitter: "Thoroughly enjoyed Barfi! this evening! Had a good old-fashioned weep at the cinema. Superlative performances by Ranbir, PC [Priyanka Chopra] and Ileana."
Producer and managing director at Disney UTV Studios, Siddarth Roy Kapur described the film's global success as "unprecedented".
