The actor-turned-director's latest project is a psychological thriller about a policeman working with two women.
A source told Hindustan Times: "When Talaash was supposed to release in the month of June, Vidya Balan's Kahaani had already released and some mischief mongers had started spreading rumours that the two films were similar.
"This isn't all as parallels were drawn between each of the three principal characters from the two films.
"The new promo has totally quashed any similarities whatsoever and Aamir is mighty thrilled about that. It is now clear that the film is about some mysterious accidents that take place at one common spot and Aamir is investigating that case.
"In this quest of his, Kareena Kapoor's character helps and ironically Nawazzuddin [Siddiqui] too has a part to play of a small time crook."
Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who has previously appeared in Khan's Peepli Live, played the part of the cop in Kahaani.
The plot of Talaash has also sparked concerns that it is similar to an American novel called Act of Providence.
It was reported in August that Khan will appear in a special music video with his co-stars Rani Mukherji and Kareena Kapoor.
